Lockdown approached: we’re cooped up inside like Croods on an average day. Everything seems so glum, and home has become work. Play has become mundane: nothing out of the ordinary. Winter slowly departs and daisies begin blooming. “I want change!” echoes in your mind. “I want… different.”
So what can I do while in the comfort of my home to create that change? Divide work from play, and family time from relaxation time – all while under safe lockdown rules and regulations.
Rules must be followed, and it’s important to understand rules to follow them, but there are some rules that you can break healthily within your home.
SIMPLE: The Timeless Decorating Rule to make Any Colour Scheme Jam EASILY!
Professionally known as the ’60 – 30 – 10’ Rule.
WHAT IS THE ’60 - 30 – 10’ RULE, AND HOW DO I USE IT?
Decorations are proportions that help guide your eyes and mind into thinking and feeling a certain way. Once a colour or texture is out of balance, it disrupts and distracts your goal that you have for a specific room. This is where the 60 – 30 – 10 rule comes into play.
60% DOMINANT COLOUR
When you walk into your bedroom or lounge, what is the main colour you see?
That colour becomes your 60% main/dominant colour scheme. Much like a blank canvas anticipating its first stroke of greatness.
Mostly made up of the walls - check out The psychology of colour on your mind article - including the floors.
30% SECONDARY COLOUR
The special colour that supports and sets a balanced tone in the room.
These specifics make up half the amount of colour used to compliment and create that firm attractive look and feel to the room.
It could be the colour of your furniture, curtains/blinds, bedding, accent chairs – any lesser fundamental pieces.
10% ACCENT COLOUR
Also known as the decorative colour pieces, i.e. your bed lamp
Smaller accessories: mirror frame, accent pillows and/or throws
Artwork: sculptures, printed fabric, paintings, etc.
An ‘accent’ piece projects your personal interests, memories and evokes special feelings. It brings life and personality to the room. It can also be a conversational piece or statement.
HARMONIC PRO or REBELLIOUS ENTHUSIAST
As I had said, some rules can be healthily broken.
When decorating your home, you want yourself to shine through, and we are complex beings after all.
Remember that you can create a different look for each room – each member ‘actively living or hibernating’ within your home has a special personality with their own creative aspect.
