Write Up: Dream Team

“I feel like a king. I feel like a king on the beat. I came up from nothing, I did. I knew I was meant to succeed...” (Young Goofy. “King on The Beat”, 2020)

This hip-hop group based in Cape Town consists of rappers and friends, Young Goofy and K.B the Rapper. The two were first introduced by a mutual friend, Wade Valentine, in 2019 and made their first collaborative project, “Hold Up” in September of that year. Soon after, they saw it fit to team up as they realised they share a similar work ethic and goal, to “poke a hole into the rap game so [they] can travel to a better place”, as Young Goofy says in their freestyle remix of Peta (originally performed by Roddy Rick and Meek Mill). Since then, they’ve worked on ten official music videos together and it looks like there is no stopping the Dream Team.

Both rappers have released individual EPs, original singles and freestyle remixes of other hip-hop/rap songs in the last few years. They have travelled around Cape Town and the Western Cape; at various clubs and social houses around the province. One of these performances include, K.B the Rapper at DSTv Mitchells Plain Festival Auditions in 2019. They have associated with other local acts like Well@ (in the single, Kaapstad); The Tispy Gang and more.

They strive to release two videos each month, to motivate and uplift the youth in their community and other young artists to keep working and motivated. This is evident in releases like “Cape Town (Remix)” which directly address and condemn gang-related violence in Cape Town. The music video even aired in CTV earlier this year. Not too long after, another single, “Ou Man” aired on the same channel. The team’s moves to be more involved in their community include a valentine’s day visit and performance in Modderdam High School earlier this year; a visit to Maneneburg to spend time with some of the children; and a spontaneous grocery gift to a fellow Cape Townian in need. The team also have built a sense of community, or rather family, within itself. Young Goofy says, “Since working together, we have not only been business partners but also treated one another as family, helping out financially, emotionally or even physically where needed to in order to get each one in the team to a better future.”

In the eleven months since its inception, the team has managed to build relationships with other companies and individuals to further its brand and to ultimately build an empire. Such relationships include Waylon Malahi Fredericks and Elpida Model Management, who cast extras and models for their music videos; and SMART PRODUCTIONS, who record and produce their songs and videos.

Further endeavours for the group involve continuing to produce more projects and growing their brand, despite the pandemic having slowed down production and how they’re able to work. Both Young Goofy and K.B work in separate working fields to fund their still growing music career, making the weekends the time to work on music and entertainment. Their latest project released, called “Boss Friends” was released in the 28th of August 2020. Good luck and well wishes to the Dream Team.
