Afterlife

Written by Tara De Wet

One life to live; one life to die.

That’s all we’re given.

Some have lived lifetimes in between;

others no more than a fleeting moment.

In all of life’s ephemerality,

nothing can stop the clock,

but choices stay choices,

whether they last or not.

Deign to hear the pealing of the bells,

a chime that portends the ultimate beginning.

Dare to oppose the ordinance of time

or verisimilitude and sanctity of the richness of paradise.

Take charge with alacrity,

seize the reigns!

Cursory guidance be a sin upon the damned.

A reprobate's fate suffers worse than death.

A contravention, a transgression against the ruling of heaven;

a harmony with pandemonium.

Virtuousness speaks truth of heart

and softens the masses of the brimstone cage.

An action taken in righteousness

projects the wisdom of age.

Covert cruelty in the darkness

shines as brightly as an inferno in the night.

Wrongness can be hidden from gudgeons,

but still poisons what is right.
