removing the dry outer petals of roses is a common way of preserving them. i remember being engaged in this very activity when i came to the following realisation: maybe we too need to let go of layers of ourselves that no longer serve us. like the roses, they make us seem undesirable and hide the beauty that we possess at our core. i understand that it must be difficult to let go of the versions of ourselves that we created to protect us, versions we created to nurture us. however, we cannot allow those versions to root us in the barren soils of our past. not when we have evergreen valleys of our future to explore.
