The Summer of ’19

by Cleo Carelse

It all starts with that selcouth feeling you get. You wake up at 10am, checking the weather forecast and it is just right. You reach for your phone, hit your friends up; “let’s go the beach.”

Blue skies, palm trees,

Salty air breeze.

Not keeping track of what day, it is.

No make-up, messy buns, oversized t-shirts with a swimsuit underneath.

Barefoot on the white sandy beach, sandals left thrown to the side next to the red and white stripe umbrella. The crashing of waves, the sound is serene while enjoying the last chapter of that book.

Ice cream sandwiches at least twice a day as the hot air breathes down your neck.

The anxiety leaving your body through the sweat dripping from head to toe.

Surfboards, boogie boards, these are the days you are never bored.

Capturing picture perfect moments for when you get old.

Jumping off a cliff into the cold Atlantic sea, only to dry up once your skin kisses the shore.

From tan lines to sandy bottoms, oh how good does the sun feel on your skin.

Cold showers, outside showers, showers of laughter melting the pain.

Living the summer daze with pizza and cocktails on the promenade.

Just to go back again,

For one last time, staying another hour to watch the luminary sun set the sky on fire.

Finally getting home, to a house filled with people that are here to stay. The burgers are on the grill and a countertop filled with snacks and all you want to do is just relax.

You find yourself floating in the pool under the stars recalling every single thought of summer filling your heart,

With long road trips and travelling over the horizon,

Picnic dates with tropical fruit drinks, movie drive-ins or “let’s just stay in.”

Midsummer car drives along the city coast with the windows down and the music crank up, blasting into the 2am night sky all the while screaming the lyrics at the top of your lungs.

Nostalgic for the summer of ’19.

In that moment, everything is simple and carefree.

Imagine that.

But knowing that all good things will have to come to an end.
