Twelve and fourteen

Written by: Kendra Slier

Over mucky leaves we tiptoed

To the row of trees up North

I captured everything in between

From the agapanthuses swaying in the wind

To the young bird singing the blues

On a pair of brown worn out shoes

We jumped across the river

In a zigzag pattern from one rock to the next

Dodging puddles of rain

Left as a souvenir from the night before

Our feet swinging merrily below

As we sat up in a tree

Only twelve and fourteen

And we vowed to never grow old,

When one of your shoes came loose

One of the ducks passing by

Had gotten such a fright

It nearly jumped six metres high

And gave you the most shadiest side-eye

A moment of silence

Before we burst into laughter

And as we watched the sun greet us

Disappearing behind the branches

We filled our cheeks with candy

Butterscotches and toffees.
