To My Lovely Light

Updated: Feb 15, 2021

Written by: Oratile Ndimande

This poem is another adaptation of my contributions to Melisa Peter’s “Pins and Needles” - from which “Boiling Point” is inspired. These warm words are a reflection and appreciation of my lovely Light...

Years ago

In an old wardrobe, a girl and I hid

from footsteps and giggles that tried to seek us out.

In that old wardrobe, the girl asked me for a kiss

Certain no-one else was in the room so we wouldn’t get found out,

In the dark, we reached out and passed some time in each other’s mouths.

This is what girlfriends and boyfriends did, I thought

Of course, since that was what we were

This is what mates at school fussed about, I remembered

This is nice, I thought. Yes, this is… nice

The day eventually ended

By the same month a year later, the girl and I never spoke again

By the same time some years later, I was in the dark

Playing hide and seek in a different wardrobe,

with just me in it.

By some random chance, there was a crack in the door

And a lovely light came in

I pushed the door slightly to seek it out

And stumbled out of the wardrobe and landed in your chair

Not too long ago,

In a room and not a wardrobe, you and I sat

watching a catastrophe to pass the time

In that room, you asked me for a kiss

In the light, we reached out and stopped time in each other’s arms

What was this new feeling I found in my chest and down below?

What was it about the taste of cheap alcohol on your tongue that I enjoyed even more?

Why didn’t I mind the way your stubble scratched against my chin?

What is this new confidence I’ve suddenly picked from your neck?

That date eventually ended

By the same month a year later, you and I still spoke

By the same time some years later, you and I still seek each other out.

I embraced what I thought I needed to hide from

And it was good

And it’s all thanks to you

My love Light
